It was great being in
Elgin and spending time with family and friends there. We flew in on the December 18
th, had a few days there and took a train to Burlington. We were there for about 10 days and then came back to
Elgin for about a week. Then back to Burlington for one more week when Brad came back for work. There was a lot of back and forth but so worth it.

We got out my parents old slides and looked at pictures of when they lived in Germany for a year. It was interesting to see their experience and some of the pictures of the same places we've been to. Broderick thought it was interesting to see Grandpa and Grandma looking so young and my niece Kalli asked, "Grandma, when did you dye your hair?" She had never seen it all brown before like in the pictures. We all were laughing at that one.

My mom always does a scavenger hunt for the kids. They get clues around the house and then there's a present at the end. The kids all really enjoy it.
This is on the train on our way to Burlington. What a nightmare. The windchill that day was like -40 degrees. Sooo cold. The original train we were supposed to be on was canceled, so we switched to a train that went to Ft Madison, a town 15 minutes south of Burlington. It was supposed to be on time, so 5 minutes before the train was expected, they announced to get to the platform. To get to the platform, you have to go underground and up and down ramps, to get to the other side. Then the train didn't come, and didn't come, and didn't come. We were freezing, but what could we do? They were giving us no info on if it would be 30 seconds or 3 hours and with Broderick and all of our luggage, it wasn't a quick trip to the depot. After about 25 minutes, Broderick lost it and started freaking out, what a horrible feeling to not be able to help your child. Thankfully a man offered Broderick and I a seat in his HEATED van (there was a parking lot right there). Poor Brad had to stay outside with the luggage. After 50 minutes the train finally arrived. We get in and the heat wasn't working in our car. It was actually blowing cold air. We thought the nightmare would never end, but we eventually made it and eventually thawed out.

Broderick was excited to see all the snow they had in the midwest. We don't get this in Denmark.
We were able to make it to the big Schambach gathering. Here's Broderick thanking Great Grandma and Grandpa for his Salty train. My grandparents are pretty amazing. They still make stockings for all the great grandkids and younger grandkids and still buy them all an outfit. I don't know how they do it.
